Support to succeed is not just about building confidence to find work, but building the confidence to be able to overcome any barriers that they might face. One example of this was a recent participant who was first referred for mental health support through the Support to Succeed programme. They admitted feeling unsure and hesitant. “I was nervous at first, and I wasn’t sure if it would help. I don’t think I wanted to be helped,” they shared. “But now I’m so glad I did it. The difference between me now and then is like night and day. I’m more positive, confident, and motivated.”

Working one-to-one with Emily, a dedicated mental health practitioner, they took part in a telephone support session focused on identifying and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns. These sessions helped them understand how these thoughts were affecting their well-being and holding them back from progressing in life and work.

Together, they built strategies to improve self-esteem and develop a more positive mindset. As a result, they now feel equipped to face challenges and approach job searching with resilience and optimism. “I feel well prepared to deal with the negative,” they said. “I’m more optimistic about the future now that I have the tools to build myself a more fulfilling life.”
