At 59, a Stockport resident is beginning a new chapter, learning new skills and reconnecting with their community, thanks to the compassionate support of their keyworker and local services.

When they first met, the participant was visibly uncomfortable in a busy setting. Sensing this, the keyworker gently adapted the meeting into a wellbeing walk through the local area. This simple change helped build trust and opened the door to a deeply personal conversation.

The participant shared that they had become increasingly isolated since their adult children moved away. They were also grieving the recent loss of a parent, someone they had relied on daily, especially for reading and writing. For the first time, they revealed that they had never learned to read or write, and without their parents’ help, everyday tasks had become overwhelming.

Recognising the need for tailored support, the keyworker explored ways to rebuild confidence. Art emerged as a perfect fit, a creative outlet with therapeutic benefits. The participant was introduced to sessions at the Arc Centre, a welcoming community hub where creativity and wellbeing go hand in hand.

To support their literacy journey, the keyworker arranged an assessment with the charity Easy Readers, with plans for weekly one-to-one reading sessions at the local library. To make communication easier, the keyworker now sends voice notes and photos of venues, helping the participant feel confident and prepared.
